Home » Shubho Bijoya

Shubho Bijoya – these two golden words brings about a wide smile on every Bengali’s face. It is an occasion of tremendous joy and happiness. The term Bijoya , literally means Victory and Shubho Bijoya means “The Auspicious Victory”. Shubo Bijoya is celebrated from the last day of Durga Puja, i.e., Vijaya Dashami to Kali Puja (Diwali). It is celebrated for about a period of one month. When Maa Durga destroyed the demon Mahishasur in a ten daylong battle, the day was christened as Vijaya Dashami – the day of victory. This victory is a celebration of good and end of evil era. Shubho Bijoya is not just a traditional greeting, but also a way to celebrate the auspicious victory over evil.

During these days, an aura of celebration and jubilation grips the environment. People pay their respect and tribute to the seniors and love to youngsters. The elders hug each other with a pure mind. This traditional hugging is known as “kolakuli”. The seniors are revered by touching their feet – a mark of humbleness and submissiveness. It is a lot of fun to see innocent little children running about here and there, trying to touch the feet of their elders.

Earlier Bijoya was celebrated to pay respect to the elders, love to the children and extending a hand of friendship to the similar age groups. It was a beautiful method to spread love all round. With passage of time, the world has become quite fast paced and people hardly have time to meet one another. The occasion of Bijoya helps us all come together and celebrate as a family. It gives as an opportunity to meet our long lost friends and relatives.

And how could we forget the mouth-watering sweets and other delicacies with have long been associated with joy, happiness and celebration. Bengalis are known for their incredible sweet tooth. A variety of sweets starting from Rosogola to kanchagola decorated beautifully on a plate are served to every guest who comes for Bijoya.

Durga Puja is the time of happiness and celebrations. Subho Bijoya is a wonderful way to end the entire Durga Pooja and gear up for the upcoming Kali Puja.
